I first went to sea on the Greater Manchester Challenge, were we did a total of 45nm on a very bumpy river Mersey but that was enough to get the sailing bug. I then managed to get on a two week trip to holland on the sailing vessel James Cook where again it was a bumpy North Sea!!!! . I volunteer with Ocean Youth Trust and since then I was first mate on James cook when I 21 and at the age of 23 I became full time skipper for 7 years.

Qualifications: Yacht Master Offshore, Powerboat Instructor, Yacht Master Ocean theory, MCA Approved Engine Course, MCA General Operators Certificate, MCA Certificate of Proficiency in Medical Care

Interests: Photography, Cycling and anything with adventure in the title and outdoors

Dislikes: dirty Fridges and alive fish don't mined them once someone else has soon the deed ;)

Favourite Sandwich: nice crusty bread thick butter and bacon, sausage and egg with mayo

Emma Clifton

1st Mate

7 years on board Spirit of Fairbridge sailing as Mate, 1 year on board Spirit of New Zealand as 3rd Mate.

Qualifications: Yachtmaster Offshore, STCW 95, Powerboat level 2, Diesel Engine Maintenance,

Interests: Sailing, Adventures, Music, Dancing, Theatre, VW Campervans

Dislikes: celery, pigeons, ironing

Oliver Evans

2nd Mate

Born 'n' raised on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales in the gorgeous market town of Knaresborough. Oliver joined a career development programme working in sail training at 18 years old, sailing for 2 years on James Cook and a year on Ocean Spirit of Moray.

Qualifications: Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Performing Arts, Yachtmaster Offshore, STCW 95

Interests: Hiking, sailing, folk music and singing in the shower

Dislikes: Crumbs in the butter

Michael de Jonge

Bosum / Watch Leader

Michael has a vast amount of experience in boatbuilding and re-fitting wooden boats. He has spent 4 years re-fitting the Spirit of Gaia, and taking part in test sails.

Qualifications: Rescue Swimming, University of Life!

Interests: Outrigger sailing canoes, sailing, free diving, martial arts, philosophy

Dislikes: Posing for pictures, arguments, shouting
