drogheda sail training voyage 2

9th June 2025 - 13th June 2025

Life on a sailing voyage

On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights describe, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage. If the following voyage description is not fulfilled for any reason, Maybe Sailing and Maybe Sailing Youth Initiative cannot be held responsible.

Our youth voyages are aimed at young people between the ages of 14 and 17.  We have scheduled our youth voyages to coincide with the school and university holidays in the UK and Ireland for maximum convenience and to make them accessible to as many young people as possible.

Under the watchful eyes of our fully trained permanent crew you will become a trainee crew member on board Tall Ship Maybe, sailing with like-minded young people. Learn about teamwork, leadership whilst learning skills in sailing a traditional tall ship. Help hoist the sails, steer the ship and navigate the seas! See amazing scenery. Spot amazing wildlife.  You don’t need any experience at all as you will learn everything you need to know on board.

You will gain knowledge of sailing, learn to live and work alongside others, gain knowledge in marine conservation and the part you have to play in the conservation of our oceans.

But, most importantly, you will have a fantastic adventure which you will share with new friends and will be etched in your memory forever.

This voyage qualifies for Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential and Gaisce Gold Award.

Had the most amazing week of my life onboard TS Maybe. The crew were fantastic and incredibly friendly, their knowledge of the boat was endless and they were especially good at teaching all of us how to sail her within an afternoon. They all had a lot to deal with, including seasickness which was made worse by the fact that most of the trainees had never sailed before. However, they were all very professional and unbelievably happy throughout the trip. Some members of the trainee crew had never been away from home for that long before and found it very hard at the start, yet by the end of the week they were the happiest they had ever been in their lives and credited that largely to the friendliness of the crew, and the homely atmosphere around the boat. We had a great race and earned a respectable position in our class and overall, followed by a fantastic crew parade and lots of partying in Esbjerg. There were lots of tears shed at the end of the trip, and every member of the trainee crew left a changed person. This was truly the most amazing experience of my life, and I have been taught so much along the way, including how to sail a 1930s boat, the importance of cleaning the ocean of plastic, and much more about the environment. The tall ships race wouldn’t have been the same on any other boat!
