Join Blue Clipper as we explore the Northern coast of Norway, beginning in the beautiful town of Bodo and finishing in Alesund. We finish our Arctic Odyssey with this rare opportunity to explore the Northern part of Norway, taking in the Norwegian mainland coast, passing many viking strongholds and hundreds of miles of wilderness.
This is a typical itinerary. What makes an adventure holiday so special however is that there can be no fixed itinerary and no part of this is guaranteed. The wind and the weather ultimately shape what’s possible each day but everything is very flexible within that. Some of the possible places we stop will be:
Bodo
The town of Bodo is the gateway to Norway’s true north and is located and the northermost tip of the Kystiksveien coastal route in the Arctic Circle. Blessed with an “oceanic climate”, Bodo enjoys cool summers and cool, yet not cold winters. Bodo also experiences some of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
Ornes
Leaving Bodo, we head for Ornes where we will anchor overnight. A passage of 45 nautical miles. On this passage we pass the Island group of Bliksvaer, Sorgugloy, Sor Arnoy, before rounding the Stottvaer peninsula and heading towards the stunning islands of Teksmona, Meloy and Messoya and our anchorage at Ornes.
Sandnessjoen
From Ornes we make the spectacular passage to Sandnessjoen, around 70 nautical miles through spectacular islands and fjords. Sandnessjoen, is perfectly located between mountains and islands. The seven sisters mountain range might be it’s primary claim to fame and you will have great views to this beautiful parade of peaks from the deck as we approach the town. The UNESCO Vega Islands are also close by. To the west the Donnamannen mountain, 858m above sea level, towers above the islands. To the east, the modern design of the elegant Helgeland Bridge impresses visitors.
Bronnoysund
From Sandnessjoen we head to Bronnoysund, our next overnight stop. This is a 50 nautical mile passage. This is a pretty little town steeped in charm and maritime heritage. Bronnoysund is situated on a narrow peninsula on the mainland, surrounded by islands and water. Here, you are actually half way along the long northbound stretch of land that is Norway. This is a vibrant and pretty little town where you will have time to stroll around the streets and take in the maritime atmosphere.
Just outside of Bronnoysund we sail past the UNESCO listed Vega Islands. It consists of 600 islands, reefs and skerries that received their UNESCO status due to the rare harmony between the islanders and eider ducks; fishermen and farmers have been involved in eiderdown harvesting for over 1500 years.
Rorvik in the Vikna archipelago.
The passage today is a stunning journey to Rorvik, 55 nautical miles to the south. The pretty port down in the Vikna archipelago, a municipality consisting of approximately 6000 islands, islets and reef. The climate is maritime, and plum and apple trees are found in many private gardens. The coastal museum Norveg is an architectural landmark and well worth a visit to learn about the region’s culture and history over the last 10,000 years.
Kristiansund
Our longest passage now, form Rorvik to Kristiansund, however we will break this up with an overnight anchorage. Kristiansund is located in the Nordmore district of More og Romsdal country. The city sits on four islands and is founded on Bacalao – dried salted cod, known locally as “Klippfisk”. You will have the opportunity to explore this unique city and try the local delicacy for yourselves!
Molde
Our final stop before Alesund is Molde, “the city of Roses”. This is a passage of 61 nautical miles. The town gets its name from the many lush and flowering rose gardens in the town. Molde is protected from the harsh surrounding elements and is beautifully situated in a spectacular fjord landscape. The town has an amazing viewpoint called Varden where you can enjoy views of the city, fjords, archipelagos and 222 snow peaks.
Alesund
Our final destination is Alesund, situated at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord, Alesund could have been taken right out of a fairy tale. The city is most know for its unique Art Nouveau architecture, which was in fact the result of a disaster.
